WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID?

A course that teaches you to identify, understand & respond to signs of mental illnesses & substance use disorders. The training gives you skills you need to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health problem or experiencing a crisis.

Our Goal

To increase understanding and assist someone experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis. 

Topics Covered

  • Prevalence and impact of mental health challenges in the USA
  • Recognizing signs and symptoms of a mental health challenge or crisis
  • How to apply the five step Action Plan (ALGEE) to assist someone experiencing a challenge or crisis
  • Recovery from a mental health challenge or crisis
  • Assisting someone in a non-crisis situation that may develop into a crisis.
  • Specific aspects of some mental health challenges and crises, such as; anxiety, depression, panic attacks, trauma, suicide, psychosis and substance use – and how you can apply mental health first aid to assist the individual.
  • Resources available to connect someone with a mental health challenge to appropriate help.
  • Self-care action plan for the first aider
